Whew! Between dealing with my back injury and our most recent military move, it’s been a minute since I’ve had a session! I knew I’d be excited to shoot again, but this session with the Lechleiter family was an extra special one. Julia and John are good friends of my brother and sister-in-law, so I knew we were going to have a good time together. I wouldn’t have wanted to start my journey as a Cincinnati newborn photographer with anyone else!
In the days leading up to their session, Julia let me know that she wanted something a little different from a typical newborn session. She hoped for some shots in Baby James’s nursery, but mostly she wanted everyday life captured for their family. Big John and her snuggling their boys. Little John playing with his favorite toys. Their pups joining the fun. We opted to bring this vision to life in their backyard.
Now, the Lechleiters have a beautiful porch that gets great light in the evening. With a cute little couch set up with pillows and flowers, it was going to be a great spot for their family photos. But there was one problem. The toddler knew his slide and swing set were right behind him!!
Props to John and Julia for being willing to go with the flow. This is the absolute most important thing when it comes to photo sessions with a toddler. If you want genuine smiles, you have to give them a reason to genuinely smile! (Makes sense, right?) The vast majority of the time, that means letting them have some control.
Over the course of our time together, Little John threw toys down the slide, flipped upside down with his dad, and went flying off the slide to get into a picture with mom. I’m sure it felt chaotic to his parents, but I think they’d agree that the pictures were worth it. Plus, we circled back to their porch at the end for some shots of just John and Julia with their pups!
Congratulations, Lechleiters, and thank you so much for trusting me to capture this sweet season for your family! 🤍

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!
I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!
Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.
I'M ERIN.
