Announcing Your PCS as a Milspouse Photographer

Moving Your Business

Okay, so you have word that you’re moving. Maybe you have official orders, maybe you don’t yet. Either way, how do you know when it’s the right time to share with your tribe that you’re moving? Let’s talk about announcing your PCS!

Before making any official announcements, consider who you don’t want to find out through business channels. It’s important to let these people know first:

  • Personal: Family, kids, close friends, neighbors, your landlord, etc
  • Professional: Clients who will be directly impacted by your move.

Once you’ve updated those who need to hear it personally, you can plan your official announcement. As with everything in business, it’s best to approach this strategically.

Timing Your Announcement

If you want to fill your calendar before leaving, your announcement should encourage inquiries. Here are two factors to consider:

1. Is There an Opportune Time?

Think about whether your announcement could tie into an event or marketing effort. For example, when we learned we were leaving Washington DC, I timed my announcement with the launch of my cherry blossom mini sessions. By announcing the move on a Friday and opening bookings on Monday, I booked a record number of sessions.

If cherry blossoms aren’t a big deal in your area, consider what is. Is there a local event, seasonal promotion, or special mini-session theme you can use to tie into your announcement? Strategically timing your move with a marketing effort can increase bookings.

2. Do You Have a Target Last Session Date?

If you know your last date for sessions, sharing it can create urgency among potential clients. Even if you’re unsure of the exact date, planning a “final hurrah” before you leave is a great way to bring in extra income. Hinting at this event during your announcement can generate interest and inquiries.

Updating Your Business Information

Once your announcement is made to your email list and social media followers, start updating your website and business profiles. The sooner you update your location information, the sooner you’ll begin gaining traction in your new area. This process is an essential step in transitioning your business successfully. Final Thoughts

Instead of making a casual announcement one day, a little planning can turn your PCS news into an opportunity to fill your calendar before the move. By thinking strategically about timing and marketing, you can make the most of your transition.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
