Groton, CT Photography Spotlight with Dacia Vu Photography

Location Guides

If you’re a milspouse photographer heading to Groton Submarine Naval Base, then I’m thrilled to connect you with Dacia Vu Photorgaphy, LLC! In this Groton, CT Photography Spotlight, Dacia shares her favorite places to shoot and the local insight she’s learned. Let’s dive in!

What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Harkness Memorial State Park

This place is massive and truly has it all! From meadows to a mansion with gorgeous gardens to an ocean front with small beach, it’s a wonderful spot for a session.

Haley Farm State Park

This park has stunning trails and loads of greenery in the warmer months, plus legendary autumn colors too. Just be careful of poison ivy in the summer!

Connecticut College Arboretum

This is a large park with so many smaller trails and quiet, open spaces to photograph families in an intimate, private setting. There’s a small pond, which makes for lots of mosquitoes in the warm season though, so bring bug spray!

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

June through October are the best months for outdoor photos in New England.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

All state parks require guests to have a state license plate or pay a park fee. Beyond that, no permits are needed at the local state parks. Wicked Tulip Farm, a popular photo spot (though not one of my personal favorites) does require a permit to do professional photos. Same for Geer Tree Farm, a popular Christmas tree farm in Griswold, CT.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

My first piece of advice is always to do your CODB and charge prices that allow you to pay yourself a livable wage. Next would be to explore! Explore locations, explore your creativity, and always look for the joy, the reason most of us started doing this in the first place.

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

There are a TON of local beautiful spots, far too many to list here. But you do have to look for them. Also, if you’re going to a park by yourself, any time, but especially around sunset, when you may be there after dark, be aware of your surroundings, and maybe carry some mace… you just never know.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
