What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Wetlands Park

This is a great area with lots of little trails to walk around on, plus a pond, a creek, and maybe some wildlife too! It is about 20-30 minutes from base and does require a free permit.

Gardens Park

This park is SO beautiful and is great in the mornings or afternoons. It has an open grassy field and beautiful leaves in the fall.

First Creek Trailhead

This trail is in Red Rock Canyon. You do not need a permit if it’s just you, your camera and your clients. If you want to walk all the way in, there is a creek! But staying close to parking gives you an amazing view of the mountains.

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

The fall is INSANELY busy. You need to be prepared for people to forget that they want photos, and then everyone remember all at the same time. I hardly ever had a slow time of year, but planned out my “vacation” months well in advance.

There is a huge photography conference every year, WPPI, and I highly suggest you take advantage of not only having it locally, but the military discount for the conference pass. It’s a great way to boost your business knowledge and skillset.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

Technically, any city park location needs a permit, but they are FREE to obtain. That said, only a few parks actually enforce it. For the Valley of Fire and Spring Mountain Ranch, you need to plan ahead and get the permit or you risk a heavy fine.

It’s very possible to have a successful business here without getting a ton of permits. I don’t know much about going down to the Strip or Fremont Street, but I know photographers who shoot down there frequently.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

Don’t give up, things will start to snowball after you get your first few clients. Vegas is all about social media, so get on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok if you’re not already. Email marketing works okay here, but it’s time to hone in your social media game. You have access to amazing locations, all within an hour or so from base. Take advantage of it!

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

Network with other businesses and photographers! My preferred studios to rent are The White Space LV, The Gathering Place, The Landing Space, and Haus of Light. There are so many studios, but these are consistent with building community and supporting photographers who support them!
