Nothing feels more 2021 than meeting a friend in-person for the first time. When Lauren reached out and told me she wanted to come out for some New Mexico photography, I couldn’t have been more excited. Through this crazy last year (and a half now…), Lauren has been a great co-worker and an even better friend. To meet up with her and her husband, and to travel to shoot in a new location was an absolute joy. Despite not shooting at White Sands due to the heat, what we did get was pretty epic.

Haynes Canyon Vista Session

After making the long drive across Texas to the high country of southern New Mexico, Lauren and John were ready to go right away. We couldn’t have set up the evening any better. We had pizzas on Cloudcroft Brewing Company’s gorgeous outdoor patio before heading down the road to Haynes Canyon Vista. This might not be a household name, but the views of High Rolls down to the Tularosa Basin are some of the best in the state. In fact, Lauren couldn’t believe this was a NM view and thought it looked like something in the Pacific Northwest!

With a light smoky haze in the air, the golden sun light coming across the desert was idyllic. From the first shots of the evening, I knew that this would be a special session. Lauren and John were naturals, cracking jokes and shooting hilarious looks at each other the whole shoot. Keeping the mood light and the smiles coming was no problem at all!

I’m pretty sure every couple I’ve ever photographed has accused themselves of being awkward in front of the camera, but these two are another perfect example of how a relationship can shine right through that feeling.  A little bit of loving smiles and sneaking kisses between shots goes a long way. When you combine that with a textbook golden hour, the romance is clear as day in every image.
