I had the incredible honor of documenting an Army retirement ceremony for Lt Col Gloria Elko. The event took place on a gorgeous day at Patton Hall on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Friends, family, and colleagues gathered to honor Gloria and recognize her many years of service. The ceremony, hosted by her husband, Lt Col John Elko, was a beautiful celebration of her family and career.
While the ceremony highlighted Lt Col Elko’s professional achievements, it was so much more than that. The Elko family’s commitment was on display throughout it all. Gloria’s husband hosted the ceremony. Her 6-year-old daughter gave a beautiful invocation. Her 4-year-old son even taste-tested the cupcakes! And thanks to her parents and in-laws, John and Gloria were able to focus more of their attention on their guests knowing that their kids were being cared for. Their family is a beautiful reminder of the challenges that come with serving in the military while raising a family. The saying it takes a village couldn’t be more true.
Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a reception where they were able to share stories and congratulate Gloria on her retirement. It was clear that she has made a lasting impression on those around her. While she will be missed, her friends expressed their confidence in her as she begins her next chapter. As a photographer, it was an honor to be able to capture this important moment in Gloria’s life, and to be a part of such a special occasion.
If you have an Army retirement ceremony or another military event coming up and are looking for a photographer to document the day, please reach out. It would be an honor to be part of your celebration.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!
I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!
Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.
I'M ERIN.
