Dayton, OH Photography Spotlight with Melissa Sheridan Photography

Location Guides

Hey friend! I’m excited to share another post in the location guide for milspouse photographers series! I’ve been especially looking forward to this one since my family is headed to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base next. If you’re headed that way too, keep reading for this Dayton, OH Photography Spotlight from Melissa Sheridan Photography!

What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Wegerzyn Gardens

This location is such a treat to go to! Even if you don’t choose this as your photo spot, you should go just to experience these beautiful gardens. Here it is pictured in May and everything was in full bloom. It is so well-kept and has plenty of variety.

Cox Arboretum

This is an absolutely stunning location in the spring. They have a field of super tall tulips as pictured here and gorgeous blooming trees. It is quite busy, but we were still able to get the shots! It’s also very pretty in fall too.

Eastwood Metropark

This park is so beautiful! It’s very close to the Air Force Museum if you’ve been there. There’s beautiful water/river as a background, a few cute footbridges, and lots of trees. This park is dog friendly and beautiful in fall, spring and summer.

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

Photography is very seasonal here due to cold winters and hot summers! Fall and spring are very busy. The Air Force Marathon is held here in September. That event brings lots of people to the area. Major roads and access to parts of base will be closed that day.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

Permits are needed for any MetroParks in the area. There is an option to get a yearly permit badge through Parks and Rec for $100.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

Try to make local connections! I did not find an active MilSpo group, Photographers group or Rising Tide society here. Cincinnati and Columbus are a bit more active in their photography community. I had to seek that out myself in Dayton, but once I did it was very rewarding and worth it!

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

Cincinnati and Columbus are amazing towns, whether for photography or just visiting. Be sure to check them out too!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
