Honolulu, HI Photography Spotlight with Kristen Campbell Photo

Location Guides

If you’re a milspouse photographer moving to Sector Honolulu, first of all, I’m jealous! As you get ready to transition your business, I’m excited to share Kristen Campbell Photography’s experience with you. She’s an incredibly talented photographer and is sharing some important details in this Honolulu, HI Photography Spotlight. Let’s dig in!

What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Waimanalo Beach

Waimanalo Beach is known for sandy beaches, teal water, and epic mountains. There aren’t any bathrooms or showers though, so be prepared for that.

Kualoa Regional Park

Kualoa Regional Park is known for its dramatic mountains. This park is one of my favorites with three drastically different backdrops. Plus, it has ample parking and access to bathrooms making it very family friendly.

Lanikai Beach

Lanikai Beach is an iconic spot and a fan favorite. Parking there is difficult, but the mokes are breathtaking!

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

We tend to be busiest during summer, fall, and winter breaks. Hawaii is a huge tourist area, so travelers coming during peak vacation times cause an uptick in business.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

ALL beaches require a permit. They are typically $20-$25 each and can be purchased through Wiki Permits or Parks and Rec.

Please be a rule follower and respect the restrictions. Some locations including Makua and Ka’ena Point are illegal to shoot at. Many photographers break these rules – don’t be one of them!

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

Get your insurance set up with the proper additional interest and apply for Wiki Permits as soon as possible. It’s only $20/permit, and so not worth the $10k fine.

We also have micro climates, so don’t trust your weather app at home for your session’s location. Rather, add all of your favorite spots to your weather app and check them regularly. I don’t recommend rescheduling a session until about an hour before it’s time to leave because the weather often clears up.

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

There are windy seasons depending on the side of the island you’re on. To be safe, just plan on it always being windy – it’s easier that way!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
