Beale, CA Photography Spotlight with Jennifer Blankenship Photography

Location Guides

If you’re a milspouse photographer moving to Beale AFB, I’m excited to connect you with Jennifer Blankenship. In this Beale, CA Photography Spotlight, Jennifer is sharing some helpful tips for running a photography business in the Sacramento area. Read along for some of her favorite locations to shoot!

What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Trees on Beale Air Force Base

Beale Air Force Base has a great little grove of olive trees near the track on base. It is right next to the Reece Point Club and I park next to the track right there and you can’t miss the trees to the right.

Folsom Lake

Folsom Lake is amazing to shoot at as well. I use my navigation to go into the Granite Bay entrance and park at the Granite Bay boat loading parking lot. Once you park, face the lake then walk to the right. You’ll see a big group of sandstone on the right and it gives a great feeling that you are somewhere else, even the ocean sometimes.

Downtown Sacramento

Downtown Sacramento is amazing. I usually do pictures around the capital building. Parking can be a bit difficult since it’s a city and it’s street parking so I find a spot closest to the Rose Garden on the south side of the capital. There you will get some really awesome shots of the capital. There is of course the rose garden and even a cactus garden which give a fun vibe too.

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

I feel like Folsom Lake is pretty busy year round. Beale AFB is never busy and Downtown Sacramento is hit or miss on if there is an event going on there. I have seen several other photographers downtown when doing pictures there but it is big enough to not have to worry about being in each others shots.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

You need a permit to shoot at Folsom Lake.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

Be prepared for rainy winters and super dry and hot summers. Unlike many other places in the US, everything is green in the winter and brown in the summer.

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

There are a few photographer groups in the area but from what I have noticed, this doesn’t seem to be an area where photographers look out for one another. I can connect you with groups that do and of course I’m always available to chat and share locations and tips!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
