Hey milspouse photographer! If you’re headed to Holloman AFB for an assignment, we’re here to help! While neither Bethany or I have been stationed there personally, we’ve both made trips to the area while stationed at other bases in New Mexico. Here’s some of our local experience in this Alamogordo, NM Photography Spotlight!
White Sands National Park is the leading photo location in Alamogordo and it’s easy to see why. The dunes are vast and stunning and quite the contrast to the surrounding landscape. It gets VERY hot here in the summer though, so be sure to check the weather before scheduling your sessions.
As a bonus tip, sledding on the dunes is super fun! Consider bringing a sled or asking your clients to if they have young kids. Erin got the biggest smiles out of her own kids this way!
Cloudcroft is a small mountain town about a half hour away from Alamogordo. The temperature difference is notable because of the elevation change, making it a more manageable spot in the heat of the summer. The photo below was taken at Haynes Canyon Vista, which is just a scenic overlook off Sunspot Highway (NM 6563). The sunset view was gorgeous despite it being such a small spot!
Most areas stay relatively busy year round. The heat of the summer is pretty miserable though, so I’d advise against photographing at White Sands unless you want to take photos on 100+ degree days. If you are going to plan a session during that time of year, sunrise or sunset is a must.
Check here for up-to-date guidelines to see if your White Sands session would require a permit.
Network and get to know others in the community, but also do not be afraid to travel for sessions. New Mexico is filled with cool locations and experiences, including the International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque.
When photographing at White Sands, be sure to take extra precautions to protect your gear. Those tiny grains of sand can get everywhere!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!
I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!
Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.
I'M ERIN.
