Sierra Vista, AZ Photography Spotlight with Christy Hunter Photography

Location Guides

If you’re a milspouse photographer moving to Fort Huachuca, this location guide is for you! Christy Hunter of Christy Hunter Photography + SEO Coaching for Creatives is sharing her favorite places to shoot in this Sierra Vista, AZ Photography Spotlight. Though spoiler alert: if you want those epic cactus shots, you’re going to have to follow her up to Tucson!

What are your top three favorite locations for sessions? Briefly share about each.

Mt. Lemmon, Windy Point

This is a hike from Sierra Vista, but I love the variety at this location. The lower parts of the mountain are lush and green, though you get gorgeous and dramatic sunset views as you work your way up.

Sweetwater Preserve

Sadly, the epic saguros aren’t present in Sierra Vista, so I regularly drove to Tucson to capture these epic views. This is my favorite spot for lots of cacti! Plus, the light falls in the perfect direction.

Brown Canyon Ranch

This spot is much closer to post in Sierra Vista. It’s a good go-to for beautiful mountains with tall grass and pretty light.

Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

I can’t think of any events except for monsoon season in June-September. Lots of sudden rain this time of year! Busy season would definitely be March-May and October-November.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

Many of the locations require an annual permit or, at minimum, permission. Please check beforehand! I heard many stories where park rangers interrupted sessions and told everyone they had to leave. Do your research. Pay the fee (which usually isn’t very high). Protect yourself.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

There are, unfortunately, no cacti in or around Fort Huachuca. If you want those cacti-filled photos, you’ll have to travel to Tucson. Prepare for 1-2 hours each way!

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

Reach out if you have any questions and I’ll help however I can!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
