Dayton Military Photographer | Col Phlegar’s Retirement

Military Session

Every military event I photograph is meaningful, but every now and then one comes with an unexpected personal connection. During my final planning call with Col Amanda Phlegar, we realized just how much we had in common. Our families were stationed in New Mexico and Northern Virginia at the same time. We know some of the same people. And, of all things, we’re both moving to Colorado soon! So, by the time her retirement day arrived, it felt less like meeting a new client and more like greeting an old friend on a snowy morning at the Air Force Museum.

Retirement Ceremony with Dayton Military Photographer

Amanda’s retirement was a beautiful celebration of an extraordinary medical career. General Robb shared the major highlights, then invited a few special guests to speak alongside him. Amanda’s friends and colleagues reflected on the way she led, served, and cared for her people. Each story offered a glimpse into her character, and by the end, there was no mistaking the mark she’s left on the Air Force community.

One of the most moving moments came at the close of General Robb’s remarks. He saluted Amanda, then invited any medical servicemembers in the audience to stand and salute with him. I’ve never seen this done before, and it was such a quiet, powerful way to honor a career devoted to healing and service.

There were many other emotional moments throughout the ceremony, but my favorite images came during the pinning. Amanda’s husband, who is also in the Air Force, stepped forward to pin on her retirement pin. The way she looked at him in that moment said it all – admiration, gratitude, deep mutual respect. It was a beautiful moment to witness and even more beautiful to photograph.

To the Phlegars, it was an honor to document such an important milestone for your family. Congratulations on an incredible career and thank you for the way you’ve served the Air Force medical community. I’m wishing your family the very best in your next chapter… and hope to connect with you again soon in Colorado!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
