Hey there, milspouse photographer! If you’re going to Ft. Sam Houston for your next assignment, this location guide is for you. Kori Frazier knows San Antonio well and has plenty of local spots to share. Keep reading for her expertise in this San Antonio, TX Photography Spotlight!
Phil Hardberger Park is a beautiful location with two different entrance areas, each offering something unique. One side is ideal for hiking, biking, and family outings, while the other is especially beautiful for photography sessions.
For photos, I prefer the area near the Urban Ecology Center. It has a distinctly Texas feel, with native plants, natural vegetation, and open landscapes that create a unique backdrop. A photography permit is required, but it is completely free to obtain. Some of my favorite spots to shoot are along the fence line and inside the “flower cage.” When giving clients directions, be sure to tell them to drive all the way to the end of the road. If they park too early, they’ll have a fairly long walk to reach the session location.
There is also a playground near this entrance, making it a great option for families who want to let the kids play after their session. Because this area is very open and relatively flat, with few tall trees for shade, I do not recommend scheduling sessions early in the day. The light can be harsh and unflattering. Personally, I would not book a session here earlier than one hour before sunset for the best lighting and overall experience. During busy season it is really important to start that full hour before sunset or you will have to wait in line for popular spots.

Landa Library is a hidden gem in San Antonio for photography sessions. The grounds are beautiful year-round and offer a timeless feel that photographs incredibly well. Between the historic stone architecture, mature oak trees, and small but charming gardens, there are endless opportunities for variety in a single session.
This location is especially perfect for families, maternity sessions, couples, and milestone portraits. The large trees provide plenty of shade, making it a great option even when the Texas sun is a little intense. Unlike many open parks, Landa Library offers beautiful filtered light throughout much of the day. One thing to keep in mind is that the library is a popular spot for both photographers and visitors. On weekends, especially during spring and fall, it can get quite busy. If possible, I recommend scheduling sessions on weekday evenings for a quieter experience.
Parking is generally ok, but the lot is small so clients should allow extra time for parking. One of my favorite things about Landa Library is the incredible variety it offers. Within just a short walk, you can capture garden portraits, architectural backdrops, tree-lined pathways, and classic park scenery. It’s truly one of the most versatile locations in San Antonio. Permit is required and free of charge.

Crescent Bend Nature Park is one of my favorite locations for clients who love a natural, peaceful setting. This park offers beautiful scenery with towering trees, open grassy areas, and winding nature trails that create a relaxed and timeless backdrop for photos. It works especially well for families, couples, maternity sessions, and children. The variety of landscapes allows for plenty of different looks within a single session. One of my favorite features is the abundance of mature trees throughout the park, which provide beautiful shade and soft, flattering light.
Parking is convenient and the walk to most photo locations is relatively short. However, some areas may require walking on uneven ground, so I always recommend comfortable footwear, especially for little ones and expecting moms.
Because of the tree cover, Crescent Bend photographs beautifully throughout much of the day. The filtered sunlight creates a soft, natural glow that works well for a variety of photography styles. Golden hour is especially beautiful, as the light streams through the trees and adds warmth and depth to your images.
One thing I love most about Crescent Bend is how quiet and tucked away it feels. It offers a natural Texas backdrop without feeling crowded, making it a wonderful choice for clients who want a relaxed session surrounded by greenery and beautiful oak trees. No permit is required.

Fall and early spring are definitely the busiest.
Almost all parks require some sort of permit. Most of them are free but some do cost between $50 and $100.
Dive in! Find locals to photograph and if they love your work, they will spread the word like wildfire. I also recommend using hashtags and marketing through social media. 75% of my business in San Antonio has come from people finding me on Instagram.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!
I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!
Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.
I'M ERIN.
