Are there any particularly busy seasons for photographers in this area? Any events an incoming photographer should know about?

Yes! May-November is considered “busy” season, especially June-October.

What should an incoming photographer know about permits in this area?

Most locations in Colorado Springs do not require a permit. The Paint Mines is the only local spot I can think of that I know requires one. However, if you’re wanting to venture to mountains near Denver & Rocky Mountain National Park, you may need a permit. Check the NPS website for up-to-date guidelines.

What is the biggest piece of advice you’d give to an incoming photographer?

Highly recommend looking into a studio rental for the winter months if you want to stay busy (November-May). Two great ones are Cultivate & Kindle. Both provide sets for holiday minis and Kindle provides a set for Mother’s Day as well. Fall & Christmas minis are HUGE and there is lots of money to be made with them. The market is VERY saturated with photographers. To establish clientele, I highly recommend doing some model calls & running discounted minis to get you going.

Any other local expertise you’d like to share?

Community over competition! There are a lot of great photographers in the area who have lots of knowledge to share. Make friends and give more than you take.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
