Virginia Cake Smash | Bennett’s First Birthday

Family Session

I had the pleasure of photographing Bennett’s first birthday this week, and let me tell you, it was a blast! From the sweet little baby details to family shots in the living room with balloons and books, and ending with Bennett devouring his cake on the back porch, we captured so many precious moments. Bennett’s family, including his parents, sister Caroline, and grandma, were all there to celebrate this special occasion. It was such a fun Virginia cake smash session!

We started off the morning in Bennett’s room, where we photographed some sentimental newborn items. Bennett’s mom saved his hospital wristband, ultrasound photo, a stuffed animal, favorite book, and his coming-home outfit, and I made sure to document all of it. As much as I love people pictures, I think it’s equally important to preserve all these little details too.

Next up, we moved to the living room for some family shots. We played with balloons, read books, and captured some sweet moments between Bennett and his family. Caroline was such a great helper, and it was clear how much she loves her little brother.

Finally, it was time for the main event: the cake smash! Bennett was tentative at first, but once he realized he could dig into the cake with just his face, he was all in. We sat at the table on the back porch and let Bennett go to town. The results were messy, but oh so adorable! We captured some great shots of Bennett covered in frosting and cake crumbs.

I loved working with Bennett’s family and I’m thrilled we were able to capture this day for them. If you’re interested in a family session or a first birthday cake smash session of your own, please don’t hesitate to reach out! I would love to help you document these special moments with your family too.

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
