This sticky, muggy morning was the perfect contrast to the last time I saw the Taylor family. You see, we met on a freezing cold March morning earlier this year to capture their family among the DC cherry blossoms. The girls were troopers considering how cold it was. And I’m so thankful they were because that gallery is one of my favorites from the year! So, I was absolutely thrilled when Katelyn reached out again, this time requesting a Washington DC cake smash session. I wasn’t sure I’d top the beauty we created in the spring, but boy was I wrong.
Despite the humid August morning, Abby and Krissy once again showed up ready to go. Actually, they didn’t seem to even mind the heat. Krissy crawled up the Jefferson Memorial steps. Abby ran laps around her sister. Both girls gave me the best giggles as their dad made silly faces behind me. We had so much fun together and this was just the start! We took all the must-have family portraits at the Jefferson Memorial before it was time to celebrate Krissy’s first birthday.
DJ took Abby on an adventure to find some ducks while Katelyn and I prepped for the cake smash. I opted for a location behind the Jefferson so we could get the DC vibe while not pulling a cake out in the middle of the memorial. Katelyn really wanted a backdrop that felt like DC since the Army has them calling this city home for a little while. I think this spot was just that! The glow on the Jefferson was stunning. The surrounding area was quiet. And boy did Krissy enjoy her cake! After bathing herself in pink frosting, we cleaned up the area to ensure we left it just as we found it, and rejoined Krissy’s dad and sister to hear about their duck adventure.
If you are interested in a Washington DC cake smash session or a family portrait session at an iconic DC location, please reach out to me. I had the best time with the Taylors and would love to document this season for your family too!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!
I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!
Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.
I'M ERIN.
