Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms | Hains Point | Lacy & Amelia

Family Session

There’s no mistaking the Yoshino cherry trees that surround that Tidal Basin. They take an already beautiful area to the next level during their peak bloom. While you might feel a bit sad when the petals fall, I see it as a sign of something else coming! In just a couple weeks following that peak bloom, you’ll start to see stunning bright pink flowers fill the trees. These are another variety of cherry blossom, the Kwanzan cherry tree, and while you don’t get the iconic DC views at Hains Point, this grove is still pretty darn magical. Personally, I prefer the Kwanzan cherry blossoms to the Yoshino ones!

Kwanzan Cherry Blossoms at Hains Point

Not only do I love these fluffier, brighter blooms for a backdrop, but they also don’t draw the same crowds as the Yoshinos at the Tidal Basin do. I met these Texas girls on a weekday morning at Hains Point and we had the entire grove to ourselves! There was no need to shoot super strategically to minimize people in the backgrounds or spend extra time in Photoshop removing them. We just found some low-hanging branches and had a wonderful time together.

Little Amelia was an absolute champ and loved hanging with her mama. We caught her staring at the blooms a few times – smart girl! – and she was thrilled to play with a few petals that had fallen to the ground. It was such a sweet morning and I’m thrilled that the timing of these blooms aligned with Lacy’s work trip to DC!

This session was particularly bittersweet for me as it marks the end of my DC cherry blossom chapter. Maybe we’ll be back for another round in the future, maybe not. I’m excited to see what springtime in Dayton holds next year, but will definitely miss all these gorgeous blooms!

Until then, if you’re interested in a mommy and me session, please reach out to me. I’d love to capture some beautiful portraits for your family too!

I HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR YOU!

more about me

I've been navigating military life with my family since 2008. In that time, I went from a full-time classroom teacher to an online course designer to a photographer. Actually, I still teach a little math on the side because I just love it too much!

Through it all, I've discovered how passionate I am about connecting with military families. Whether it's taking photos at a retirement ceremony, coaching a fellow milspouse photographer, or just grabbing coffee with a new squadron friend, I love this community. And as a teacher at heart, I'm excited to use this space to share what I've learned about business and life with you.

I'M ERIN.
